The Wife of Noble Character

Proverbs 31:10-31 is a passage that has always intrigued me, convicted me, and at times frustrated me.  As a teenager, I found this passage and made it a personal goal to live like this woman.  During my high school graduation, a teacher spoke these words of blessing over me.  I clung to them.  A few years later as a wife and a new mom, I dismissed this goal as unattainable.  I reasoned that this passage could not have referred to a single person, but rather was a conglomeration of the best attributes of many women.  I was wrong!

For the past few months, our family has been living with a Proverbs 31  lady.  She is truly a "wife of noble character" and is worth abundantly more than rubies.  Her husband has full confidence in her, and she brings him good and not harm as she goes about her daily life.

I have never seen her with flax, but her eager hands can often be seen knitting and croqueting.

She is like a merchant ship, bringing food from the Winn Dixie across the street.

She gets up early, stays up late, and provides food, love, hugs, and encouragement to her husband, our family, her mom, and anyone else that happens to stop by.

Verse 17 describes her well when it says, "She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks." She opens her arms to the poor. She makes coverings for her bed, and the beds of orphans in Haiti and Thailand.

She makes pickles and sells them, giving the money to missions.  "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."  She speaks with wisdom, and I do by best to soak it up.

Her children arise and call her on Skype and Facetime with words of blessing.  Her husband adores and praises her.

29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

I am thankful for a living and modern example of a Proverbs 31 lady and for the opportunity to see this passage in action.  I love you, Jonty!
